General Recreation Screening Tool (GRST)
For individuals aged 10 years old and younger, Assisted Independence requires the GRST AX. To be able to complete the GRST Assessment, please download the GRST Screening Tool.
The assessment should be completed initially and once annually. Ideally, the scores should improve from year to year.

The GRST is meant to be completed for individuals under 10 years of age because it focuses on basic skills developed through childhood. It focuses on the domains of physical, cognitive, and affective. For each domain, there are a number of functional skills that are assessed. To score the GRST, we look at the developmental skills listed in each age group for each functional leisure skill category. If the individual is able to demonstrate between 50% and 75% of the skills listed within the age group, draw a dashed line through that age group. If the individual is able to demonstrate 75% or more of the skills listed within the age group, draw a solid line through that age group.

At the end of the assessment, you will then see which age group the individual’s skill level is in for each domain. For example, they may have scored majority of the skills in the 1-3 years range for the affective domain. We would then say they have an ability of a 1–3-year-old in the affective domain. They do not have to score the same age group across all domains.

After completion of the initial assessments, the initial assessment instructions and scoring sheet should be uploaded
to the profile of the individual supported on the Bureau of Disabilities Services (BDS) Online Portal.
